  16. <p>A CIA man's jury can't agree: Were his acts criminal--or just
  17. devious?

  19. <p>     Three times the jury deliberating the Iran-contra perjury
  20. trial of former CIA spy chief Clair George trooped into the
  21. courtroom to report an imand three times Judge Royce Lamberth
  22. sent them back out to keep trying. Finally, after almost six days
  23. of fruitless deliberation, foreman Steven Kirk said his panel was
  24. totally deadlocked on all nine counts--from perjury to giving
  25. false statements to Congress. "As a citizen," said Kirk, a
  26. Washington consultant, "I expect senior government officials
  27. like Clair George to be more forthcoming to Congress. As a
  28. juror, I felt compelled to give him the benefit of the doubt on
  29. whether his answers violated criminal statutes."
  30. </p>
  31. <p>     Citing jurors' reports that a majority favored acquittal
  32. on all counts, defense attorney Richard Hibey said he would
  33. urge independent counsel Lawrence Walsh to drop the case. Walsh
  34. is reportedly determined to proceed. Judge Lamberth ordered a
  35. retrial to begin Oct. 19.
